Strengths:
An elite athlete for the tight end position. Runs like an oversized receiver. Has lined up at tight end and receiver. Ran a wide variety of routes at Florida, including screen passes which are extremely rare for a tight end. Flashes the speed and elusiveness to pick up yardage after the catch.
Weaknesses:
Lacks ideal height. Has the size of a tight end, but its not all muscle. Lacks the strength to contribute much as a blocker. May not be an every-down player due to his lack of size.
Comments:
Hernandez is an intriguing prospect. He's more athletic than most tight ends and should be a threat in the passing game, but his lack of strength and ability to contribute as a blocker limits the impact he can have on a game. Bigger, faster linebackers in the NFL may be able to neutralize his athleticism with their physical play. He has some upside, but there's definitely risk involved. He's the type of player who's NFL success could depend on his team's willingness to draw up some plays specifically designed for his skill set. In the wrong system he could be a non-factor.
