Strengths:
A freakish blend of size and speed. Has the ability to play strong or free safety. May even be able to transition to outside linebacker. Possibly the hardest hitter in this year's draft class. Reliable tackler. Solid in zone coverage. Experienced as a kick returner.
Weaknesses:
Hands are made of bricks; won't come up with many interceptions. Overagressive; prefers to go for the knock-out hit rather than make a wrap-up tackle. Struggles in man coverage; doesn't have the agility to stay with a receiver.
Comments:
Mays is a very talented safety but despite having all the tools he isn't the complete package. He is far better against the run than in pass coverage, and those types of players are becoming less valuable in the pass-first league that the NFL has become. His closest NFL comparison is the Bengals' Roy Williams. Like Williams he can hit like a truck, but struggles in coverage and rarely makes a play on the football in the air. Mays will wow scouts at the combine, which will likely cause a team to select him in the top 10-20 picks, but I personally feel as though that is a reach for a rather one-dimensional safety.
