Josh Doctson Scouting Report

Josh Doctson WR TCU #9

Size/Athleticism:
6’3″, 195 pounds. Production outweighs his raw athleticism. Definitely not an elite athlete. Stats were inflated due to usage rate.

Separation Skills: Speed is adequate but definitely not a threat to run past many defensive backs in the NFL. Route technique is shaky. Tends to round off his routes. Not particularly explosive out of his breaks. Will struggle to create consistent separation at the next level.

Ball Skills: Goes up and battles for the ball in traffic as well as any prospect in recent memory. Does an exceptional job adjusting to the ball in the air. Consistently goes up to pluck the ball at its high point whenever possible.

Blocking: Average effort at best. Strength is average but he could benefit from bulking up.

Intangibles: Has a reputation as a hard worker and good teammate. Elite production in college.

Durability: Suffered broken wrist in November, 2015.

Overview: Doctson’s ability to win the battle for the contested catch will translate smoothly to the next level, but the rest of his game is unrefined. It’s difficult to envision him playing a significant role early in his career due to his shaky route technique and his modest speed. In the long run, he could emerge as a solid No. 2 or No. 3 option in an NFL offense.

Tyler Boyd Scouting Report

Tyler Boyd WR Pittsburgh #23

Size/Athleticism: 6’2″,200. Excellent athleticism for his size. More explosive than most receivers at his height. Lined up as a traditional running back on occasion. Has experience returning kicks.

Separation Skills: Has enough speed to be a viable deep threat at the next level. Routes are adequate but could be improved. Tends to route off his cuts, which limits the effectiveness of his explosive ability. Most frequently used on quick-strike routes due to the limited skill set of the many quarterbacks he worked with at Pitt.

Ball Skills: Strong hands to pluck the ball from the air. Knows how to use his frame to shield defenders when going up for contested targets but lacks the strength to consistent fend them off if he doesn’t immediately gain the upper hand in positioning for the ball. Fairly consistent at high pointing the ball when in tight coverage. Does a great job adjusting to poorly thrown balls.

Blocking: Gives an adequate effort and has enough strength to be effective.

Intangibles: Suspended after DUI arrest in 2015.

Durability: No known issues.

Overview: Boyd can make an immediate impact as a slot receiver in the NFL and could be a more explosive version of Jarvis Landry. He played with three different quarterbacks in three years as a starter at Pitt and is definitely a candidate to have a more impressive pro career as a result of the inconsistent supporting cast he had in college. He probably lacks the size and the elite speed to develop into a No. 1 in the NFL, but either in the slot or as a second option on the outside, he’ll make an impact as a starting receiver.

Corey Coleman Scouting Report

Corey Coleman WR Baylor #1

Size/Athleticism: 5’10”, 190 pounds. Elite speed and agility. Occasionally lined up at running back. Dangerous in the open field and can make defenders miss with ease.

Separation Skills: Has the speed to run past defenders. Explosive out of his breaks. Did not run anything resembling a full route tree at Baylor. Almost exclusively ran go routes or screens. Many of his “routes” are him reacting to the quarterback as he’s flushed from the pocket – essentially street ball.

Ball Skills: Fairly reliable hands but he’ll drop some easy ones. Does a great job tracking the ball and adjusting, but does not always high point the ball and tends to let it come to him. Leaping ability gives him potential to continue to develop in this area.

Blocking: Never asked to block much. Tough to project, but he doesn’t have the frame to excel in this area.

Intangibles: On film you’ll notice him clearly takes plays off – don’t mistake this for laziness. Baylor does this by design to rest players without taking them off the field due to their high-speed offense. Art Briles’ offense has not produced many successful NFL prospects despite elite production at the college level.

Durability: Sports hernia surgery in December, 2015.

Overview: Coleman is a tough prospect to project at the next level. He’s an elite athlete with the speed to create consistent separation. But he’s also extremely raw. He’ll show flashes of brilliance as a rookie, but how quickly can he learn to run routes at an NFL level in order to shake even the most athletic NFL cornerbacks? It’s very difficult to envision him as an impact rookie, but he clearly as No. 1 receiver potential.

Michael Thomas Scouting Report

Michael Thomas WR Ohio State #3

Size/Athleticism:
6’3, 210 pounds. Moderate speed and agility. Wins more with technique than athleticism.

Separation Skills: Doesn’t have the speed to get over the top of the defense with consistency but does have the route-running skills to create enough separation. Effectively uses double moves and subtle fakes to create space. Long speed is average at best, but he shows a nice burst out of his breaks. Some of moves appear a little too deliberate and won’t fool as many defensive backs in the NFL.

Ball Skills: Elite hands. Only five drops in 2015.

Blocking: Not really interested in blocking. Gets out of the way whenever possible and gets tends to get grabby when he does feel the need to engage. Strong enough to deliver an occasional pop though.

Intangibles: Spent a year at Fork Union Military Academy (teammates with Cardale Jones) when he wasn’t offered major scholarships out of high school. Rare example of a player being redshirted as a sophomore – reportedly due to struggles learning offense in 2013. Entering draft early, but is actually five years removed from high school. Nephew of Keyshawn Johnson.

Durability: No known issues.

Overview: Thomas is an ideal No. 2 receiver at the next level. Most No. 1 corners will shut him down because they’ll have superior athleticism and if he can’t force them into a misstep, he won’t break free. But his route running is already developed to the point that he’ll burn many inexperienced cornerbacks, even as a rookie. Surrounded by enough talent, he’ll make an instant impact in the NFL, but he shouldn’t be viewed as a prospect who can change an offense by himself.

Laquon Treadwell Scouting Report

Laquon Treadwell WR Ole Miss #1

Size/Athleticism: 6’1″, 210 pounds. A natural athlete but lacks elite speed.

Separation Skills: Struggles to create separation. Routes are inconsistent and lacks the speed to run away from defenders. Will not be a threat to consistently create separation down the field at the next level.

Ball Skills: Elite ball skills. Shows great concentration to pluck the ball from the air. Consistently catches away from his body when possible. Has shown the ability to snatch the ball from the air away from defenders when competing for jump balls. Knows how to position himself and box out defenders.

Blocking: Gives a consistent effort and has the size to dominate certain matchups.

Intangibles: Rarely a vocal leader but gets along with teammates and coaches and stays out of trouble.

Durability: Suffered brutal season-ending broken leg and dislocated ankle in 2014, but it was a fluke injury. Has been durable otherwise.

Overview: Treadwell’s lack of speed holds him back, especially since he does not consistently run crisp routes. However, he his excellent hands and his ability to compete in traffic makes him a potential No. 1 target at the next level. He has a similar skill set to Dez Bryant—although not as explosive—and should be viewed as a first-round lock. Early in his career he may be best suited to work in the slot while he develops the route technique to be more efficient on the outside.
