Josh Doctson Scouting Report

Josh Doctson WR TCU #9

Size/Athleticism:
6’3″, 195 pounds. Production outweighs his raw athleticism. Definitely not an elite athlete. Stats were inflated due to usage rate.

Separation Skills: Speed is adequate but definitely not a threat to run past many defensive backs in the NFL. Route technique is shaky. Tends to round off his routes. Not particularly explosive out of his breaks. Will struggle to create consistent separation at the next level.

Ball Skills: Goes up and battles for the ball in traffic as well as any prospect in recent memory. Does an exceptional job adjusting to the ball in the air. Consistently goes up to pluck the ball at its high point whenever possible.

Blocking: Average effort at best. Strength is average but he could benefit from bulking up.

Intangibles: Has a reputation as a hard worker and good teammate. Elite production in college.

Durability: Suffered broken wrist in November, 2015.

Overview: Doctson’s ability to win the battle for the contested catch will translate smoothly to the next level, but the rest of his game is unrefined. It’s difficult to envision him playing a significant role early in his career due to his shaky route technique and his modest speed. In the long run, he could emerge as a solid No. 2 or No. 3 option in an NFL offense.
