Christian Ballard

Christian Ballard scouting report

Christian Ballard DT Iowa
Ht: 6’4″

Wt: 288

Has experience at both end and tackle. Nice blend of size and speed makes him an ideal 3-4 defensive end. Also has the ability to line up at tackle in a 4-3 scheme. Explosive off the snap; allows him to generate a powerful bull rush, even considering his relative lack of size for an interior lineman. A hard worker with a ton of experience against top competition.
A ‘tweener – smaller than your average interior lineman, not as athletic as your average end. Benefited from playing next to Adrian Clayborn and received less attention from offensive lines as a result.
Ballard is a tough player to project, and his success at the next level may depend on the type of system he lands in. He may not have a true position in a 4-3 scheme, but he could excel at end in a 3-4. Either way, he’ll either need to add some strength or slim down, depending on what type of role he’s asked to fill. Given the questions about his position, it’s tough to justify him in the 1st round but he could prove to be a steal in the 2nd or 3rd.
